The aim of this project is to reduce poverty and vulnerability in Misserwadi by creating productive employment and income-generating opportunities for the rural poor and vulnerable, especially youth and women. The project aims to create more stable economic conditions in the slum over the next ten years. To achieve this goal, the project will implement a range of initiatives, which are outlined below:
Diverting youth towards more IT-based opportunities: Given the increasing demand for skilled IT professionals, the project will aim to train and equip the youth of Misserwadi with the necessary skills to secure employment in the IT sector. This will involve setting up IT training centres in the slum, providing access to computers and the internet, and offering courses in coding, web development, and other relevant fields.
Skill centres for women: The project recognizes that women in Misserwadi face significant challenges in accessing education and training opportunities. To address this, the project will establish skill centres for women in the slum, providing training in areas such as handicrafts, tailoring, and cooking. These centres will offer a safe and supportive environment for women to learn new skills and develop their talents.
Sewing centre for women: Many women in Misserwadi have skills in tailoring but lack the resources to set up their own businesses. To support these women, the project will establish a sewing centre in the slum, providing access to sewing machines, materials, and other necessary equipment. The centre will also offer training in business management and marketing, enabling women to sell their products and generate income.
Provision of incentives to daily wage workers or labourers to support or commence their business: The project recognizes the potential of daily wage workers and labourers to start a successful business . To support this, the project will offer incentives, such as microfinance loans, to enable these workers to start their own businesses. This will create more stable employment opportunities and generate income for the workers and their families.(30 families were sponsored in Ramadan 2022)
Small scale factories for women including online business ideas by involving volunteers: To encourage the growth of small-scale manufacturing businesses in the slum, the project will establish small-scale factories, which will be run by women. The factories will focus on producing products that are in high demand, such as handicrafts and textiles. In addition, the project will involve volunteers with experience in entrepreneurship and business management to provide support and guidance to the women running these businesses.
Provision of jobs: Teachers have been hired and are being paid to educate the children of Misserwadi, providing job opportunities to young graduates.( 2 computer teachers, 1 English ,1 Marathi, 1 Science)
In summary, the project aims to reduce poverty and vulnerability in Misserwadi by creating productive employment and income-generating opportunities for the rural poor and vulnerable, especially youth and women. The initiatives outlined above, including IT-based training for youth, skill centres and a sewing centre for women, incentives for daily wage workers, and small-scale factories for women, will help to create more stable economic conditions in the slum over the next ten years.
